So Patty says you can go to your first horse show...here is what to expect on warm-up day.
If you have a question, do not hesitate to ask an older kid or Patty. They would rather you ask
them and do it right the first time than not ask and have to repeat your work.
1. ARRIVAL - There is always a list at the entrance to the show that tells you where our stalls are.
They are usually listed by the trainer's last name, which in this case is Morton.
First priority is the comfort of your horse. Each horse must have:
Shavings spread in his/her stall.
A full water bucket.
Hay.
Walls checked for nails to ensure that you and your horse will be safe. Remove any you find.
Help unload the trailer. ALWAYS WALK A HORSE AT A SHOW ON A CHAIN !!!
2. ORGANIZE - Your tack and supplies need to be put in the tack room or near your horse's stall.
If you choose the tack room, you need to put your things in there as soon as you arrive and keep
your space neat.
Get your horse unwrapped and groomed so that when Patty says "get on" all you have to do is
to put the saddle on and you are already organized for a great ride.
Always halter your horse when working near them in a stall. Even if your horse is trustworthy, the
busy show atmosphere can cause any horse to spook at something that they would not ordinarily
be afraid of.
Roll your wraps and put them with your things near your horse's stall or in the tack room.

3. AFTER RIDING
-
Your horse always comes first - untack, clean him up, clean tack and then you can relax.
Make sure he/she has food, water and that their stall is clean. We don't have grooms to clean the
stalls or to feed and water your horse for you so you have to do EVERYTHING on your own.
4. REGISTERING -
To get your number you should meet with Patty to discuss which classes you will show in.
Neatly fill in the show registration form and get your mom/dad to sign it. Ask a big kid where you
can find the office. You will need the form and a blank check, signed, to get your number which you
will wear as you show. (For mom or dad - this is called an "open check", you will fill in the amount
later when you "cash out" and receive your bill at the end of the show.)
5. LEAVING AT THE END OF WARM UP DAY
Make sure all the stalls are clean, everyone has food, water, and your horse has gotten any
supplements or medication that they may need throughout the show.
Check that the stall door is secure.
Ask Patty what time to be there the next day and DON'T BE LATE !!! It never hurts to be there
10 minutes early.
Take all leather items home with you (tack, girths, saddles, etc.), but all plastic items (tack box,
brushes, saddle rack, etc.) can stay. The tak room doesn't get locked and you do not want to
have to replace leather items if they are stolen.

6. HAVE FUN !
Going to a horse show is supposed to be fun, so remember to enjoy yourself. Take time out of
what seems like an extremely hectic day to watch more experienced riders compete. Even just
watching better riders can make you a better rider ! Also, don't forget to cheer on your other barn
mates. The more you relax and enjoy the smoother your show will go for you and your horse.
7. FINAL ADVICE
Pitch in and help, even if it's not "your turn", especially if you are sharing a horse.
Your horse always comes before you, no matter how tired you might be your horse is most
likely more tired than you.
Borrow or share items if you can. Hand-me-downs are a great thing !
Never be afraid to ask questions !!!
